Esteban Ocon believes his eighth-place finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix proved what he is capable of when his Haas performs as expected.

The Frenchman recorded his best result of the 2026 Formula 1 season in Baku after a difficult campaign affected by inconsistency in the performance of Haas car parts. The issue is understood to have affected Ocon more than team-mate Oliver Bearman, although recent races have brought signs of improvement.

With Ocon also facing uncertainty over his Haas seat for 2027, his Baku result carried extra significance. After frustration over a yellow flag affecting his qualifying session, he responded with a strong race and came within 0.03s of beating Arvid Lindblad to seventh.

Ocon Delighted With Azerbaijan GP Result

Ocon was thrilled with the performance and felt eighth reflected what he and Haas were capable of achieving with a competitive car.

“Super happy with the result,” he said after being pipped to seventh place by Arvid Lindblad by a mere 0.03s. “When the car is working, that’s what we deserve.

“We had a strong car since the beginning of the weekend, we took all the right decisions on the pitstop and on the safety car. I did the same overtake I did in Zandvoort, just before the line, so that was really good as well. And again, two places there as well into Turn 2.

“So, yeah, it’s been a really, really good race, I’m really happy with the result. I think it gives just good, positive vibes for everyone to move forward on that triple [-header].”

The result came during an incident-filled race featuring two safety cars. Ocon and Haas made the most of the opportunities, with Bearman also finishing ninth to give the team a double points finish.

Ocon Looking Forward to Sepang Challenge

Ocon now turns his attention towards the upcoming Sepang event, where the high-speed layout will present a different challenge for Haas.

“We are going into a very difficult track with a lot of high-speed corners,” he said of the upcoming Sepang circuit. “And we show that we have a car that’s pretty competitive. It should be like two exciting races for us, I’m looking forward to them.”

The performance in Azerbaijan gives Haas encouragement heading into the next part of the season, particularly after Ocon’s struggles earlier in 2026.

Ocon Says He Deserved His Baku Result

Asked whether his Azerbaijan performance felt like redemption after a difficult period, Ocon gave a direct response.

“I can say I deserve that – not all the rest of the shit.”

He then pointed towards his record across different categories as evidence of his ability, making a similar argument during his television interviews after the race.

“I’ve raced with everyone out there, you know? And I’ve always been on par.

“I won every championship that I’ve raced [in]. I won races in Formula Renault, I won championships in go-karts, I won [European] Formula 3, I won GP3, I was racing in the top 10 in DTM for half a season, I won in Formula 1. I can do it, you know?

“I’m one of the best out there, and I’m not afraid to say it.”

Ocon Makes His Case After Difficult 2026 Season

Ocon’s comments underline the confidence he retains despite a challenging season and questions surrounding his Formula 1 future.

His claim about winning every championship he competed in required some qualification, which he quickly provided through his wider explanation. His description of his short DTM spell is also less clear from the results, as he recorded one top-10 finish across 10 races in 2016.

His wider record includes championship success in karting, European Formula 3 and GP3, along with becoming a Formula 1 race winner.

For Ocon, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix offered a chance to remind Haas and the rest of the paddock of his ability. Eighth place represented his strongest result of 2026, and his reaction afterwards made his view clear.

“I’m one of the best out there, and I’m not afraid to say it.”
