Fernando Alonso has confirmed he will remain with Aston Martin for the 2027 Formula 1 season, ending months of uncertainty surrounding his future in the championship.

The 45-year-old was approaching the end of his existing Aston Martin contract, which was due to expire after the 2026 campaign. Questions over retirement had followed Alonso throughout the season, particularly because of his criticism of Formula 1’s new regulations.

Alonso had previously indicated his future would depend partly on the direction of the championship. He has been critical of the greater emphasis on electrical power under the 2026 regulations and had held discussions with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

Those questions have now been answered, with the two-time world champion signing a new Aston Martin deal.

Alonso Commits Future to Aston Martin

Alonso joined Aston Martin from Alpine ahead of the 2023 season and immediately enjoyed one of his strongest starts with a new team, scoring six podiums from his opening eight races before adding another two later in the year.

Results have been harder to find since then, but Alonso remains committed to Aston Martin’s long-term project.

“I’m very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin,” said the 32-time race winner. “I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level.

“I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed. I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities.

“I look forward to making more memories on the racetrack in front of the passionate fans. Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special.”

Difficult 2026 Season for Aston Martin

Alonso’s decision arrives during a challenging period for Aston Martin.

After the strong start to his time with the Silverstone team in 2023, Aston Martin struggled to keep pace with its rivals in the development battle. The introduction of the new 2026 regulations brought further difficulties, including problems surrounding the competitiveness of its Honda power unit.

After 15 rounds, Aston Martin sits 10th in the constructors’ standings with three points, all scored by Alonso. The team currently sits ahead of only newcomer Cadillac.

There have been some signs of improvement. Alonso finished 10th in Monaco before producing an impressive drive from 18th to ninth at Zandvoort, where Aston Martin’s revised chassis and Honda engine updates helped improve its performance.

Despite the difficult season, Alonso’s new contract shows he intends to remain part of the project into 2027.

Lance Stroll Also Extends Aston Martin Contract

Aston Martin has also confirmed a contract extension for Lance Stroll, keeping its current driver pairing together.

Stroll is set to enter his ninth season with the Silverstone-based operation in 2027 after initially joining the team from Williams.

“I’m very happy to continue with Aston Martin for the long term,” said Stroll. “I’ve been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team.

“There is so much hard work going on at Silverstone with real progress being made, and the determination I see in every department is a huge motivation for me.

“I know we are heading in the right direction, and my commitment is stronger than ever to help us achieve our goals.”

Lawrence Stroll Confirms Unchanged Aston Martin Line-Up

Team owner Lawrence Stroll welcomed the decision to retain both drivers as Aston Martin continues its efforts to move up the Formula 1 grid.

“Lance and Fernando have been a crucial part of our journey and we are very pleased to confirm that they will continue with us into the next chapter for the team.

“Having two drivers with their level of experience, commitment and knowledge provides tremendous value to the whole organisation.

Alonso’s extension removes one of the major questions surrounding the 2027 driver market. At 45, the Spaniard will continue his Formula 1 career for another season as he seeks to help Aston Martin recover from a difficult start to the new regulations.
