David Coulthard chooses his GOAT between Verstappen and Hamilton

by | Jan 6, 2026 | F1 Drivers, F1 News, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen

David Coulthard has revisited one of Formula One’s most divisive debates by comparing Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in a direct world champion shoot out. Appearing on an off season episode of the Red Flags podcast, the former grand prix winner was asked to choose between the sport’s greatest champions through a series of head to head matchups.

The format forced Coulthard into increasingly difficult decisions. By the final stages, his list had been narrowed to four names. Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. From there, the conversation shifted from statistics to philosophy, presence and evolution.

Separating Two Modern Greats

Coulthard admitted immediately that choosing between Hamilton and Verstappen was uncomfortable.

“It’s very difficult to separate Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen,” he said, acknowledging the scale of the comparison.

Despite the difficulty, he ultimately made his choice.

“I’m going to go with Max,” Coulthard stated.

He followed that decision with honesty about how it would be received.

“This won’t surprise some people who know me and like me, and know me and dislike me.”

The reasoning behind the choice was not rooted in disrespect for Hamilton. Instead, Coulthard framed it around generational progression.

“For the following reasons. I think that every generation should be better. That’s what evolution is. I think that there’s a crossover of generations there, and Hamilton has been incredible.”

Why Coulthard Leaned Toward Verstappen

Coulthard explained that his preference for Verstappen came from how the Dutch driver carries himself.

“I find Max very grounded. It’s just Max. He’s present, and we know when he’s doing his interviews and press conferences, if he’s not happy, he says it, and he’s not shy to say that. He owns his beliefs.”

That authenticity mattered to Coulthard.

“You know whether he’s happy, you know whether he’s sad. So I go with Verstappen.”

Even so, he stressed how close the comparison remained.

“They’re very difficult to separate the two of them, in terms of Hamilton at his peak.”

Questioning Hamilton’s Current Level

Coulthard then addressed what he believes is the most sensitive part of the debate. Whether Hamilton is still at his best.

“I’m not sure that he is at his peak anymore. Controversial for a loser like me to dare to say that.”

He explained why he felt that way.

“It just feels the greats match or beat their teammates, and, in the last couple of years, if I’m not mistaken, he didn’t do that with George, and it doesn’t feel like he’s done that with Charles.”

Coulthard emphasised that his view was based on results rather than emotion.

“If we put opinions to one side and we just use what the two things that are ultimately important in Formula 1, the stopwatch and the chequered flag, I think the outright speed is maybe not there with Lewis anymore.”

Despite that assessment, he was quick to show respect.

“But you’ve got to give him so much respect.”

Why Verstappen Still Feels Ascending

Coulthard contrasted Hamilton’s current phase with Verstappen’s trajectory.

“With Max, it still feels like he’s developing. It still feels there’s more to come. It still feels like, how far can this guy go?”

That sense of unfinished potential became central to Coulthard’s argument. Verstappen is still improving. Hamilton, in his view, has already climbed the mountain.

The Role of Modern Technology

Coulthard was asked whether Verstappen’s development benefited from growing up with modern simulation technology, something Hamilton did not have.

“There’s no question it would have enhanced my experience and my knowledge,” Coulthard said.

“But I think you can’t ever really regret what you never had. It just didn’t exist in my time. We’re born into the eras we’re born, and it’s our duty to try to do the best we can with the information and the tools we have.”

He then highlighted Verstappen’s upbringing.

“The benefit for Max is that he’s the son of a former Grand Prix driver who had arrived wonderfully fast.”

Coulthard reflected on Jos Verstappen’s career and its influence.

“I think he wasn’t as physically well prepared and was up against Schumacher in the Benetton. It kind of didn’t manifest itself in the same way as it might have done.”

That experience shaped Max’s path.

“I think he made it his mission with Max to right the wrongs of his own career.”

Coulthard credited both parents.

“He absolutely has so credit to Jos and Sophie. They’ve created this incredible athlete and incredible racing driver with so much speed.”

Verstappen Falls Short of the Ultimate Pick

Despite choosing Verstappen over Hamilton, Coulthard did not place the Dutchman at the top of his all time list. That honour went to Ayrton Senna.

Coulthard’s connection to Senna runs deep. He replaced the Brazilian at Williams after Senna’s death in 1994 and credits Senna’s words to Sir Frank Williams for helping secure his Formula One future.

He described Senna’s presence as unmatched.

“I’ve never seen a driver with the same aura around him.”

Coulthard explained why Senna remains his number one.

“The reason I say that is because I’ve even heard Max acknowledge his admiration for what Ayrton achieved in that era and his single minded approach.”

He added a striking personal memory.

“Having worked with Senna, having experienced being in a room with people and the room falling silent because Ayrton’s come in from a back door and is standing there.”

“There was something, in my opinion, and I’m not a spiritual person, that’s the only time in my life where you felt the presence of someone before you saw them.”

Final Verdict

Coulthard summarised his view clearly.

“Max is way too grounded. He’s a great, of course, and will continue to do amazing things. But Ayrton Senna.”

Closing Thoughts

David Coulthard’s reflections offer a rare blend of respect, honesty and personal experience. He did not diminish Lewis Hamilton. He did not exaggerate Max Verstappen. He simply described what he has seen, felt and lived.

In his eyes, Verstappen edges Hamilton today. Senna stands above them all.
