DEEP DIVE: What’s going wrong at Red Bull? Horner praises McLaren as ‘in a league of their own’

The 2025 Formula 1 season has presented unexpected challenges for Red Bull Racing. After years of dominance, the team now finds itself grappling with technical issues that have impacted performance, particularly evident during the Miami Grand Prix.

Tyre Management Woes

One of the primary concerns for Red Bull has been tyre degradation. In Miami’s hot and humid conditions, Max Verstappen, despite securing pole position, struggled to maintain tyre performance throughout the race. He noted, “The race was unfortunately quite difficult for us in general and we ultimately lacked pace and struggled with the brakes. Every time that I tried to get close or push a bit more, my tyres would overheat a lot.”

Team Principal Christian Horner acknowledged McLaren’s superior tyre management, stating, “Well done to McLaren – they were in a league of their own today, particularly with tyres running at the temperatures that they are.”

Brake System Challenges

Brake performance has also been a point of contention. Horner mentioned issues with the brakes contributing to the car’s overall performance problems, leading to a “numbness” in the car’s feel for the drivers . This lack of feedback can hinder a driver’s confidence and ability to push the car to its limits.

Aerodynamic and Balance Issues

The RB21’s aerodynamic balance has been inconsistent, affecting its performance across different circuits. Verstappen highlighted the car’s instability, stating, “I think our main issue is that our car is not where we want it to be. Everyone knows that within the team as well and that’s what I focus on, to be honest.”

These balance issues have made it challenging for drivers to extract optimal performance, especially in varying track conditions.

Leadership and Development Concerns

The departure of key personnel, including design expert Adrian Newey, has raised questions about the team’s development direction. Verstappen expressed concerns about the car’s drivability compared to competitors, emphasizing the need for improvements.

Horner, however, remains optimistic, stating that the team is prepared for a “development race” to address these challenges and improve the car’s performance over the season.

Looking Ahead

As the season progresses, Red Bull faces the task of addressing these technical issues to remain competitive. With McLaren currently leading the Constructors’ Championship, Red Bull must focus on enhancing tyre management, brake performance, and aerodynamic balance.

The upcoming races in Europe, with potentially cooler temperatures and different track characteristics, may provide opportunities for Red Bull to test new developments and regain their competitive edge.

In the high-stakes world of Formula 1, adaptability and continuous improvement are key. Red Bull’s response to these challenges will determine their trajectory for the remainder of the 2025 season.
