DEEP DIVE: Who are our top 10 drivers as we reach the halfway stage of the season?

by | Aug 13, 2025 | F1 Drivers, F1 News

The first half of the 2025 Formula 1 season has been a thrilling mix of dominant drives, unexpected podiums, and underdog performances. While the championship standings tell part of the story, evaluating who’s truly impressed requires looking beyond the points table and factoring in car performance, consistency, adaptability, and big-race moments.

Here’s my ranking of the top 10 drivers at the halfway point of the season — based not just on results, but on how much they’ve extracted from their machinery.

1. Oscar Piastri – McLaren Mercedes

Piastri has been the star of 2025, leading the championship with a combination of speed, precision, and maturity beyond his years. His controlled aggression, particularly in key overtakes, has made him the benchmark for racecraft this season. Crucially, he’s beaten his more experienced teammate on multiple occasions in equal machinery, underlining just how good he’s been.

2. Lando Norris – McLaren Mercedes

Norris has matched Piastri for raw pace and remains firmly in the title fight. His qualifying performances have been superb, and when the strategy has fallen his way, he’s converted into big points. While a few missed opportunities have cost him, Norris remains one of the most complete drivers on the grid, and McLaren’s dominance owes a lot to having two drivers pushing each other at the highest level.

3. George Russell – Mercedes

Russell has been relentlessly consistent, maximising the W16’s potential with smart drives and opportunistic podiums. He’s been one of the season’s most dependable performers, rarely making errors and always in the hunt for big points. Mercedes may not have the outright pace of McLaren, but Russell’s ability to stay in the fight with faster cars has kept them in the mix.

4. Max Verstappen – Red Bull Racing

Verstappen’s year hasn’t been as dominant as previous seasons, but that hasn’t stopped him from delivering moments of brilliance. Strategy blunders and reliability issues have hurt his title chances, yet whenever he’s had a competitive car, he’s been right at the front. His raw speed and racecraft remain among the very best, and he’s still capable of turning a weekend around on pure talent.

5. Alexander Albon – Williams Mercedes

Albon has been one of the surprise stars of 2025. Williams started the season strong, and Albon capitalised with standout results, including a top-five finish that reminded everyone of his elite racecraft. Even as the car’s performance has fluctuated, he’s stayed competitive in the midfield battle and continues to lead by example in extracting the maximum from the FW47.

6. Nico Hülkenberg – Kick Sauber Ferrari

The long wait for Hülkenberg’s first podium finally ended at Silverstone, and it was richly deserved. He’s been one of the most consistent midfield drivers all year, regularly bringing home points for Sauber even when the car hasn’t been at its best. His ability to stay out of trouble and deliver clean, disciplined races has been a huge asset to the team.

7. Charles Leclerc – Ferrari

It’s been an inconsistent year for Ferrari, but Leclerc has still shown flashes of brilliance. His defensive masterclass in Belgium to hold off Verstappen for the entire race distance was one of the drives of the season. While the SF-25 has often been tricky to manage, Leclerc’s pace in qualifying and his ability to dig deep in high-pressure situations keep him in the conversation for the best of the rest.

8. Andrea Kimi Antonelli – Mercedes

Antonelli’s rookie season has been nothing short of impressive. Already a podium finisher, he’s shown maturity, composure, and raw pace that suggest he’s on the path to becoming a star of the future. While still learning the ropes, his performance relative to Russell in several races has been remarkable for a driver in his debut year.

9. Isack Hadjar – Racing Bulls Honda RBPT

Hadjar has been fearless in his rookie campaign, regularly taking the fight to far more experienced drivers. Multiple points finishes in a car that isn’t consistently competitive show just how good he’s been. His aggression is balanced with control, making him one of the most exciting prospects to watch heading into the second half of the season.

10. Esteban Ocon – Haas Ferrari

Ocon has been a key part of Haas’s resurgence in 2025, scoring vital points early in the season and keeping them competitive in the Constructors’ Championship. His performances haven’t always been flashy, but his steady hand and ability to deliver solid results have been crucial for Haas in the tight midfield fight.

Honourable Mentions

  • Liam Lawson – Racing Bulls Honda RBPT: After early struggles, Lawson has found his rhythm, putting in solid midfield performances and edging closer to regular points.

  • Gabriel Bortoleto – Kick Sauber Ferrari: A rookie on the rise, Bortoleto’s recent points finishes show he’s settling in and beginning to make a real impact.

  • Lewis Hamilton – Ferrari: While Ferrari’s inconsistency has hurt his results, Hamilton’s charge from 18th to 7th in Belgium proved he still has the determination and racecraft to shine.

Conclusion: A Season Balanced on a Knife Edge

The halfway stage of the 2025 season leaves the championship still very much alive. Piastri leads the way, but Norris, Russell, and Verstappen are all in position to mount a title challenge. In the midfield, the fight between Williams, Sauber, Haas, and Racing Bulls is delivering just as much entertainment as the battle at the front.

If the first half of the season is any indication, the run to the finale will be filled with twists, standout performances, and possibly one or two big surprises.
