DRIVER SPOTLIGHT: George Russell calls for tangible FIA reforms amid conduct rule debate

At the 2025 Miami Grand Prix press conference, Mercedes driver George Russell addressed both his team’s performance and broader issues concerning Formula 1’s governance.

Mercedes’ Season Performance

Russell acknowledged that Mercedes’ three podium finishes in the first five races exceeded their pre-season expectations. He noted that while the team has been consistent, they are still trailing behind McLaren, with Red Bull and Ferrari posing close competition. Russell emphasized the importance of consistency and learning from each race to improve performance.

Concerns Over FIA Conduct Regulations

Russell expressed skepticism about FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s recent remarks on potential rule changes regarding punishments for misconduct, including swearing. He emphasized that drivers seek tangible changes rather than verbal assurances. Russell highlighted that the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) has not received a response from the FIA since their open letter requesting more collaborative dialogue.

Advocacy for Driver Representation

Echoing sentiments shared by fellow driver Lewis Hamilton, Russell advocated for a more formal role for drivers in discussions with the FIA. He suggested that incorporating drivers’ perspectives would be beneficial for the sport’s governance and ensure that decisions are made with firsthand racing experience in mind.

As the Miami Grand Prix approaches, Russell and Mercedes aim to build on their early-season momentum while continuing to advocate for meaningful changes within Formula 1’s regulatory framework.
