As the 2025 Formula 1 season unfolds, Fernando Alonso, the two-time world champion, continues to demonstrate his enduring passion and competitiveness in the sport. With his contract at Aston Martin extending through the end of the 2026 season, Alonso has recently shared candid reflections on how upcoming changes in F1 and personal factors will influence his decision to continue racing or retire.
The Significance of the 2026 Season
The 2026 season is poised to bring the most significant technical overhaul in Formula 1’s history, introducing new car regulations that could dramatically alter the competitive landscape. Alonso acknowledges the importance of this shift, stating, “It will be a very important one, yes. Not the final one.” He emphasizes the need to assess his motivation and performance as the new regulations take effect, noting, “I think I need to see how next year starts and how motivated I am. Every year, there is a different mood into the season.”
Alonso also highlights the role of personal circumstances in his decision-making process, saying, “There is a different feeling on how you perform, how competitive you feel yourself, how motivated you are to keep your fitness at the high level, personal situation, family situation—all these things play a role in some important decisions in life.”
Listening to the Stopwatch
Alonso has always been attuned to his performance metrics, often referring to the “stopwatch” as the ultimate indicator of his competitiveness. He asserts, “At the end of the day, the stopwatch will tell me also when I have to stop. Or I have a physical condition that is bad, or I have pain driving or whatever, that could happen as well.” He continues, “Sometimes you get a little bit injured, you get some bad races. But if we keep it healthy and in good conditions, the stopwatch also will tell me one day that I don’t feel fast enough or I don’t feel that I can put the lap together. But so far, I’m happy with that.”
Despite the challenges, Alonso remains enthusiastic about racing, stating, “I’m happy when I’m on the grid. When I finish the race on Sunday, even if the results are not nice at the moment, I’m so motivated to go to the next race and try to overcome the bad race and have a better one.”
A Commitment Beyond Driving
Alonso’s dedication to Aston Martin extends beyond his role as a driver. He has expressed a desire to remain with the team in a different capacity after his racing career concludes. He explains, “My contract is much longer than my racing career, so I will stay with this team for many, many years in a different role.” Alonso adds, “If that means we can win a World Championship even when I’m not behind the wheel, I will still feel very proud of the project.”
Navigating the 2025 Season
The current season has presented challenges for Alonso and Aston Martin. Despite a difficult start, he secured his first point of the season with a ninth-place finish at the Spanish Grand Prix, demonstrating resilience and determination.
Alonso remains focused on continuous improvement, both personally and for the team, as they prepare for the opportunities that future seasons may bring.
Fernando Alonso’s approach to his Formula 1 career is marked by introspection, strategic planning, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. As he continues to compete at the highest level, his decisions are guided by a desire to contribute meaningfully to Aston Martin’s success, whether on the track or in a supporting role. Fans and the broader F1 community will undoubtedly watch with interest as Alonso’s journey unfolds in the seasons ahead.
