DRIVER SPOTLIGHT: “It’s hard to watch” Nico Rosberg comments on ex-teammate, Lewis Hamilton’s emotional state

Lewis Hamilton’s highly anticipated move to Ferrari for the 2025 Formula 1 season has been fraught with challenges, both on and off the track. The seven-time world champion, known for his resilience and competitive spirit, has faced a series of underwhelming performances that have tested his mental fortitude.

A Difficult Start with the Prancing Horse

Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari was expected to rejuvenate his career. However, the reality has been starkly different. Despite a promising start with a Sprint victory in China, Hamilton has struggled to find consistency. His best finish so far has been fourth at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, and he currently sits sixth in the Drivers’ Championship, trailing teammate Charles Leclerc by 23 points.

The Spanish Grand Prix epitomized his struggles. After qualifying fifth, Hamilton finished sixth, overtaken by Nico Hulkenberg’s Sauber in the closing laps. Post-race, Hamilton described it as “the worst race I’ve experienced. Ever,” expressing deep frustration with the car’s balance and performance.

Emotional Toll and Public Apology

Hamilton’s post-race interview in Spain revealed the emotional toll the season has taken. Visibly dejected, he offered terse responses and appeared close to tears. When asked about the car’s issues, he replied, “Not particularly, it was not a great day. The strategy was good, the team did a great job. That’s it.” He later apologized to Sky Sports presenter Rachel Brookes for his demeanor, admitting he was “just so down.”

Sky Sports commentator David Croft defended Hamilton, stating, “He wears his heart on his sleeve and should be applauded for that.” Croft emphasized that Hamilton’s reaction was genuine and stemmed from his self-critical nature and the pressure of adapting to a new team.

Rosberg’s Perspective on Hamilton’s Form

Former teammate Nico Rosberg has offered a candid assessment of Hamilton’s current form. Rosberg suggested that Hamilton’s struggles might be age-related, noting, “Even if he’s the greatest of all time, at some point you are going to get a little bit slower and that’s age-related.” He pointed out that Hamilton has been outqualified by Leclerc in seven of the eight races so far, indicating a potential decline in performance.

Rosberg also expressed concern over Hamilton’s emotional state, stating, “It’s hard to watch.” He elaborated, “Sunday was a horrible day for him because he was just slow out there, which is very unusual. He doesn’t have answers either. When you don’t have any answers, it’s really tough as a driver then you see your teammate race their way to third place on the podium. In light of the whole season he’s had so far, it’s a … .”

Team Dynamics and Technical Challenges

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has downplayed the notion of a crisis, attributing some of Hamilton’s difficulties to technical issues. He revealed that Hamilton’s car suffered floor damage during the Spanish Grand Prix, which compromised its balance. Vasseur emphasized that Hamilton spent a significant portion of the race ahead of George Russell, suggesting that the performance gap wasn’t as significant as it appeared.

Despite rumors of friction with his race engineer, Hamilton has dismissed such claims, stating that their relationship is strong and that any disagreements are part of the normal working process.

What does the furture hold?

Hamilton’s journey with Ferrari is still in its early stages, and while the initial results have been disappointing, there remains potential for improvement. Addressing the technical issues with the SF-25 and fostering a cohesive team environment will be crucial for Hamilton to regain his form. As the season progresses, the F1 community will be watching closely to see if the partnership between Hamilton and Ferrari can yield the success that both parties envisioned.
