Max Verstappen eyes 5th straight WDC after double McLaren DSQ

Verstappen took the checkers in Las Vegas with a composed drive when it mattered. He made the start clean, maintained pace on a tricky street-circuit that punishes mistakes, and executed when the pressure was high. His win was his 69th career victory and came at a time when he needed it most.

The win by itself would have been significant, but the timing makes it a turning point. With just two races left in the season, every point counts. Verstappen closed the gap behind the championship leader and put himself back into title contention.

McLaren’s shock disqualification

Even more headline-grabbing than the win was what happened to McLaren. Their drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, finished on track in strong positions, Norris in second and Piastri in fourth, but both were disqualified after the race for a technical infringement. The skid blocks (plank wear) on their cars were found to be below the minimum thickness required by technical regulations.

It was a narrow margin: for Norris the skid block measured around 8.88mm versus the required 9mm minimum. For Piastri the measure was even lower. McLaren argued mitigating circumstances, unexpected porpoising, limited practice time, reduced running, but the stewards applied the regulation strictly.

The result: both McLaren cars stripped of their results. That changed the classification, elevated other drivers up the order, and had a major impact on the championship standings.

What this means for the championship

Before Las Vegas, Norris held a lead and McLaren looked in strong control of the Drivers’ Championship. After the disqualifications and Verstappen’s win, the mathematics changed.

Now Norris still leads the standings, but the margin has shrunk significantly. Both Piastri and Verstappen are tied, just behind him. With only two races remaining (Qatar and Abu Dhabi) and a limited number of points available, the title fight is very much alive.

From Verstappen’s point of view, the door is open. His win gave him momentum, and McLaren’s misfortune created the chance. He is no longer an outsider to the fight. For McLaren, the mood must be one of damage-control: they must now protect Norris’s lead, prevent further errors, and ensure no more technical problems. For Piastri, the mis-step is both a lost opportunity and a warning. The team will now face internal pressure to maximise every session.

The Constructors’ Championship is less impacted (McLaren had already secured it), but this moment underscores how one small technical issue can affect both driver titles and momentum.

Key take-aways

  • Verstappen showed why he remains a winner under pressure: he seized the moment, delivered when it counted.

  • McLaren’s disqualification is a reminder of how fine margins are in F1: a few tenths of a mm can cost tens of points.

  • The championship calculation now favours no one outright: with 58 points available, strategy, reliability, mistakes and pace will all decide the winner.

  • For Norris, his lead is still solid, but no longer comfortable. He must execute perfectly now.

  • For Piastri and Verstappen, the fight is real again. Piastri must rebound quickly. Verstappen must keep the momentum and win when possible.

Final thoughts

The Las Vegas result will be talked about for years. Verstappen’s win is excellent in its own right. But when combined with McLaren’s double disqualification, it becomes a pivotal moment. The championship shifted that night. What looked like a controlled lead for McLaren now faces threat. The title remains up for grabs.
