Max Verstappen highlights major mistake of the season at Spanish GP

Max Verstappen has given his most detailed explanation yet of the moment he now sees as the biggest mistake of his 2025 season. His clash with George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix triggered what he describes as an emotional spike, a moment where “everything went red.” As the season enters its final three rounds, Verstappen sits 49 points behind championship leader Lando Norris, and a fifth straight world title looks unlikely. His comments show clear self-reflection at a crucial point of the year.

A Season Slipping Away

Verstappen believes the middle phase of the season hurt Red Bull’s title chances more than any single race. The RB21 struggled for balance and consistency before the upgrades introduced at Monza. Those changes helped, but he said the team did not always maximise the package earlier in the year. That left him in recovery mode.

Still, he singled out Barcelona as the moment he should have handled differently. Speaking to Viaplay, he said, “The only point of criticism is obviously Barcelona. That move itself and the entire incident was not good, but that’s also because I care a lot. I could have thought, ‘this car isn’t working anyway, so I let it go.’”

Why He Couldn’t Back Down

Verstappen made it clear that easing off is not part of his mentality. He said he can’t walk away from the car knowing he held something back. That goes against how he approaches racing.

“I can’t accept stepping out of the car and knowing that I didn’t give everything. Then I get angry with myself, so I can’t drive at 80 percent,” he explained.

This attitude fed directly into the Barcelona moment. Verstappen felt the car was not strong, but his instinct to fight for every position took over. When Red Bull later called to fit the hard tyre and incorrectly instructed him to let Russell through, Verstappen lost patience.

“All Signs Went Red”

The sequence at Barcelona pushed him past frustration. He said he was angry with what happened on the straight at the restart, then with the fight into Turn 1, and finally with the order to give the place back.

“That’s when all signs went red,” he admitted.

The emotional spike was brief, but Verstappen recognised the impact. He said he could feel the frustration building and understood why the situation escalated.

A Mistake He Won’t Repeat

Verstappen has taken full responsibility for Barcelona.

“That was a mistake from my side, and of course I learn from it,” he said. “Those moments won’t happen again next year, even if we’re in a similar situation with the car.”

He views it as a valuable lesson. Not about avoiding battles, but about understanding when a moment can harm the bigger picture. With the championship deficit now large, the cost of that mistake is clearer.

His View on His Season

Despite the difficulties, Verstappen feels he has driven at a high level. He says he has extracted the maximum from the equipment he had and sees that as a positive.

“Every season you try to look back and think where did I leave something on the table or where could I have been a bit more consistent? But with the material I had, I think I’ve maximised a lot throughout the season,” he said.

He also noted that judging performance from the outside is difficult. The raw pace of the car has varied from race to race, making consistency harder to show.

Final Thoughts

Max Verstappen’s reflection on the Spanish Grand Prix shows a more measured, self-aware side of the champion. He knows Barcelona was a turning point. He knows the frustration took over. He knows the moment cost both points and momentum.

The title fight is still alive, but the gap to Norris is real. Verstappen now aims to finish the year strong and carry the lessons into 2026. His message is simple. One mistake shaped his season. It won’t happen again.
