Norris narrowly beats Verstappen in FP1 at the Abu Dhabi GP

by | Dec 5, 2025 | F1 News, F1 Race Week

The first practice session at Abu Dhabi kicked off under a cloudy sky at the Yas Marina Circuit. The 2025 title-decider weekend began with a dramatic start. Lando Norris ended FP1 fastest with a lap of 1:24.485. He edged out his main rival Max Verstappen by just 0.008 seconds. That tiny gap sets the tone for a tense finale.

Behind them, Charles Leclerc posted the third-fastest time. The session showed how tight the field remains. For teams and drivers fighting over the championship or key positions, every millisecond could matter.

FP1 also saw an unusually high number of rookie and reserve drivers on track. That shift comes because of the season-end rule requiring some drivers to sit out and be replaced by young talents. Only 11 regular race drivers took part. Among them, Norris and Verstappen made their work count. The mix gave some teams a chance to test future talent while finalising data before qualifying and race sessions.

What FP1 Reveals About Title Battle Momentum

For Norris, topping FP1 under pressure sends a clear message. He enters the weekend with form and confidence. Beating Verstappen, even by a few thousandths, shows his McLaren remains competitive under track conditions that could favour instability or surprises.

Verstappen’s near-top time signals he stays in the fight. But he sounded cautious: on team radio, he indicated his car felt unstable on a slippery afternoon track. Given that race runs under lights and cooler track conditions, managing grip and balance may become critical.

Leclerc’s speed suggests that Ferrari also stays relevant. They might not be in the title fight this weekend, but a strong FP1 could convert into solid qualifying pace or a shot at a podium.

For other teams, the mix of rookies and regular drivers limits how much FP1 performance translates to race expectations. Yet FP1 offers valuable data on track evolution, tyre behaviour and baseline setup.

Rookie Drivers Step In While Title Contenders Sit Out

One notable story from FP1 is that not all top drivers took part. Oscar Piastri stepped aside as per the rookie-outing rules. In his place, reserve driver Pato O’Ward drove the McLaren.

Teams used the opportunity to give track time to junior talent. That often happens at season end when stakes shift and teams look to test up-and-coming drivers. Even though the session carries less weight for the title contenders, the data and feedback remain useful for weekend preparation.

For Piastri and others sitting out, skipping FP1 represents a trade-off: less track time now, but no risk before qualifying and race sessions. Given the tight margins at Yas Marina, it makes sense.

Conditions and Context Matter

FP1 ran in unrepresentative conditions compared with the race. The afternoon heat and evolving grip meant that cars handled differently than they likely will under the floodlights at race time. Teams must interpret FP1 data carefully rather than read too much into final times.

Additionally, the presence of several rookies and reserve drivers means tyre and fuel strategies differed from what regular drivers would run. That limits how comparable some lap times are.

Still, FP1 offers a baseline. It reveals where cars are wrangled quickly or struggle early. It shows which packages adapt fastest, even in tricky conditions.

What to Expect from the Rest of the Weekend

FP1 gives a first hint. But the real battle begins in qualifying and the race.

For Norris and McLaren, building on FP1 will be key. They must refine the car for cooler conditions and tyre wear over long runs. Their ability to convert speed into consistent performance may decide the title.

For Verstappen and his team, finding grip and balance will be essential. The near-top lap shows potential. The challenge lies in making the car stable under lights.

Other teams such as Ferrari must capitalise on FP1 data to improve race setup. A podium or strong finish could still shake up final standings outside the title fight.

Teams running rookies this weekend will focus on data collection and driver evaluation. That long-term approach matters beyond Abu Dhabi.

Closing Thoughts

FP1 at Abu Dhabi gave fans a glimpse of what might come. The tiniest margins separated favourites. Track conditions remain unpredictable. Rookie drivers added variation.

Norris may hold the early lead. Verstappen stays close. Leclerc and other midfield contenders lurk. The title remains undecided. The season finale feels wide open.

Expect intense qualifying. Expect a tight race. Expect small gains to matter. The fight ends under lights at Yas Marina. The path to the championship runs through precision, nerves and consistency.
