Formula 1 has officially confirmed that the Mexico City Grand Prix will remain on the calendar through 2028, following a new three-year extension announced on April 30, 2025. This agreement ensures that the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez will continue to host one of the sport’s most vibrant and culturally rich events for at least three more seasons, starting from 2026.
A Decade of Momentum
Since its return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2015, the Mexico City Grand Prix has rapidly become a fan favorite. The event is renowned for its electrifying atmosphere, passionate fans, and unique cultural integration, particularly its alignment with the Day of the Dead celebrations. In 2024, the race weekend attracted a record-breaking 405,000 spectators, underscoring its popularity and significance within the F1 calendar.
The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, situated over 2,000 meters above sea level, presents a distinctive challenge for drivers and teams. Its 4.3 km layout includes the iconic Foro Sol stadium section, where drivers are greeted by a sea of enthusiastic fans, creating a spectacle unparalleled in motorsport.
Economic and Cultural Impact
The Grand Prix has not only been a sporting success but also an economic boon for Mexico City. In 2024, the event generated approximately 17 billion pesos and created over 9,400 jobs, highlighting its role in boosting tourism and local businesses.
Alejandro Soberón Kuri, President and CEO of CIE, the event’s promoter, emphasized the importance of the race:
“This not only contributes to the economic development of Mexico City but also promotes our city, as well as our country, in a significant way worldwide.”
The event’s alignment with cultural festivities, such as the Day of the Dead, allows Mexico to showcase its rich traditions to a global audience, further enhancing its appeal.
Leadership and Support
The extension of the Grand Prix contract is the result of collaborative efforts between Formula 1 and local authorities. Stefano Domenicali, President & CEO of Formula 1, expressed his appreciation:
“We are very excited to announce that the Mexico City Grand Prix will continue to be part of our calendar until 2028. Formula 1 is energy, passion, and emotion, and every year the unique atmosphere created by our fans in Mexico City is one of the most incredible and energetic experiences of our championship.”
Clara Brugada, Head of Government of Mexico City, also played a pivotal role in securing the extension, demonstrating the city’s commitment to maintaining its place on the global motorsport stage.
Looking Ahead
The 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix is scheduled for October 24–26, following the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.
While Mexico currently has no active drivers in Formula 1, the nation’s enthusiasm for the sport remains undiminished. Speculation surrounds the potential return of Sergio Pérez, who has been linked with a drive for the new Cadillac team set to debut in 2026. Pérez has indicated that he is in discussions with several teams and is considering a return if the right opportunity arises.
The extension of the Mexico City Grand Prix contract through 2028 reaffirms the event’s status as a cornerstone of the Formula 1 calendar. Its unique blend of high-altitude racing, passionate fan engagement, and cultural celebration continues to captivate audiences worldwide. As Formula 1 looks to the future, the Mexican Grand Prix stands as a testament to the sport’s global appeal and its ability to unite diverse cultures through the thrill of racing.
